The Forgotten Soldier, by Guy Sajer

This book recountsthe horror of World War II on the eastern front, as seen through the eyes of a teenaged German soldier. At first an exciting adventure, young Guy Sajer’s war becomes, as the German invasion falters in the icy vastness of the Ukraine, a simple, desperate struggle for survival against cold, hunger, and above all the terrifying Soviet artillery. As a member of the elite Gross Deutschland Division, he fought in all the great battles from Kursk to Kharkov. His German footsoldier’s perspective makes The Forgotten Soldier a unique war memoir, the book that the Christian Science Monitor said "may well be the book about World War II which has been so long awaited." Now it has been handsomely republished as a hardcover containing fifty rare German combat photos of life and death at the eastern front. The photos of troops battling through snow, mud, burned villages, and rubble-strewn cities depict the hardships and destructiveness of war. Many are originally from the private collections of German soldiers and have never been published before. This volume is a deluxe edition of a true classic.

Wow - a must read
By Befragt
The best way to start this review is to say "wow." Just "wow." This is the most engrossing, intense, and amazing book I've read in a long time. My only regret is that I didn't read it sooner.

Sajer obviously fought for the Nazi's on the Eastern Front during WWII. That said, there's nary a peep of ideology in the book, either pro-Nazi or anti-communist. This is really about one man's experiences, not about what caused the war, or even what he believed when he wrote the book.
The experiences themselves are stunning - frightening, but stunning. He starts off with some pretty brutal details about basic training as a young man/child - Sajer couldn't pass the test to be in the Luftwaffe, so he ended up in the infantry, first driving a truck, later as a member of the renowned Gross Deutschland division, seeing action in many of the most important battles of the Eastern Front.

Sajer himself said he didn't write this book so that it could be cited by historians - the book is about experiences. And like few other authors, Sajer conveys those experiences - hunger, fatigue, hope, fear, sadness, cold. Anyone who believes that war is a glorious experience will be sadly disappointed - Sajer expends no effort to make himself into a hero, and indeed, while Sajer loves some of his comrades-in-arms, the book overall is devoid of positive energy.

I haven't read All Quiet on the Western Front in a number of years, but honestly, I can't imagine it surpassing this book.

There have been some criticisms of this book by reviewers who maintain it is made up. Notably, some of the critics have recanted after corresponding with Sajer, and frankly, I don't know how anyone who reads this book could imagine that it is not true.

This book is an absolute must read. No doubt. Buy it now.

A WWII favorite, very hard to put down; you feel like you are there
By A. F. Shanks
This book has been out there for quite some time. Written by Guy Sajer who was a soldier in the Wehrmacht. This is a VERY detailed true account of his experience of serving in the German Army during WWII; primarily, on the dreaded Eastern Front. During his service, Sajer joined the elite Grossdeutschland Division and the brutal training he received is also fully described. I found his writing style superb and you feel as though you are right there, next to this young soldier, experiencing all of the horrors of war at the same time. I first read this classic when I was 15 years old; read it during my summer school break and could rarely put it down. It was so good that I would stay-up most of the nights reading away and only putting it down when I would fall asleep between 5 to 6am. Once I woke-up in the afternoon, I'd go right back to reading. Continued to do such until finished; once finished, I immediately read it again. I mention all of this to try and demonstrate just how powerful this book was to a 15 year old. After many long years of adulthood, I decided I wanted to read this book a few more times but had misplaced my original. I purchased this book on Amazon and began reading it immediately and found it to be just as thrilling as I did as a teenager! My wife saw my intense interest as I was reading it and once finished, asked if she could give it a go. I think that she may have been just as captivated as I.....Any student of military history (especially of WWII Eastern Front) who has yet to read this masterpiece should really do so as soon as possible; I just can't imagine anyone being disappointed. I'm quite surprised that a movie hasn't been made from this by now. This true account of a young German soldier serving on the Russian Front is my all-time favorite!

Keeps you in the moment with it's vivid descriptions of the horrors of war
By Roland W.
Both of my grandparents served in WWII on the eastern front. Both of them had scars to proof it (shot 2 & 3 times).
I was always interested in that time and the forgotten soldier is giving you some insight of what happened. While not everything in this book might be a true event (I can not remember everything I did 2-3 years ago) It makes it easier to read that way, as it tells a story instead of a documented account of a battle. It gives you a glance at the live of a German soldier and the hardship and terrors of war.
Good read - keeps you entertained and thinking about what happened back then. Font is a little on the small side.
