A trip down memory lane

This tribute to a successful, driven businessman of the late 19th to mid 20th century, is told by family members who share their first hand recollections of the man, his ideas, and his publications. We read intimate details of the life of his large family, their homes, travels, children, hobbies (sports), friends, and personal tragedies. Mr. Collier began his career in the business office of a coal mine in West Virginia and from there spawned a direct mail order campaign that transformed the way business was transacted in those times. His sales pitches and techniques became hugely popular as did his books on his "positive" thinking ideas. He would wind up working in the family publishing company which was kept alive as a thriving enterprise by family members. He was interested in health foods, exercise, and put his family first. Parts of this book are devoted to his children's memories of life with their father and mother who maintained homes in New York and Florida. This would be of interest to readers who enjoy reminiscenses of that time period. My thanks to the author and Goodreads for a complimentary copy.

Her first published writing was a short story published in Today's Black Woman Magazine, entitled Before Flight. She is also the writer and producer of a coming of age short film, entitled The Wreckless Five. When The Silence Is Too Loud is her debut novel. She lives in Fayetteville, Georgia with her husband, three children, her mother and a horse of a dog named Hershey.

Smiling Faces Sometimes Tell Lies

When the Silence is Too Loud is the debut novel from Author Valerie Dickinson and it is so good.

It's about family dysfunction, sin, faith and forgiveness. The Devereauxs are a family fraught with pain, guilt and shame because of unresolved issues, uh... let's call a spade a spade...sin. All the sin requires a cover up, resulting in secrets and lies. Think Adam and Eve in the garden; think you and yours in your house. Selah They each manage their guilt and pain in different ways, but none manage it successfully. At a time when they are at their most vulnerable, in walks a stranger who inadvertently rips the thinly-veiled cover from their deceptions, and one by one the secrets and lies are exposed. Will the family only held together by a thread come completely undone or will their faith bring forgiveness and ultimately, restoration?
I loved this book and its "where you live" message and Author Dickinson's method of presenting it--from characters to pacing--was brilliant. You will definitely want to get this book and keep an eye out for anything new coming from her anointed pen. Don't forget to reward her efforts with a review.

Brilliantly written heart warming story

I just finished reading the published version of "When the Silence is Too Loud". I must say it is a brilliantly written heart warming story. I brought the book with me to my son's soccer tournament and I missed the start of one of the games and the start of happy hour with the soccer parents because I could not peel myself away from this book. Valerie Dickinson did such an awesome job evoking the characters' emotion on each page. I too, as many of Valerie's fans, want to continue following the characters lives. Kudos to the debut novelist.. Well written!

Excellent Book!

As a survey of military thought from the Enlightenment up to the Cold War, I found Professor Gat's book to be comprehensive, thought-provoking, well researched, and well written. In particular the effect of established opinions on the nature of war and how it should be waged, and the reaction of succeeding generations to these established opinions is very interesting. Specifically, the military theories developed during the Enlightenment and the reaction of military theorists to the victories of Napoleon (such as Clausewitz) were of special interest. As Professor Gat himself remarks, there is a tendency to treat the period before Clausewitz as a kind of intellectual void, during which there was no discussion of the theory and practice of war at all. In fact there was a great deal of controversy on military matters taking place in both France and Germany. Admittedly this is a specialist book, not for everyone. But for anyone interested in this topic, I highly recommend this book.

Disappointing survey of military thought

This is the one-volume collection of Azar Gat's trilogy on military thought. He explores thinking about war and strategy ranging from Machiavelli to the 1950s, relating the ideas to their cultural and historical contexts.
As he writes, "New ideas emerge during periods of revolutionary change or at times of crisis, in response to great historical challenges." The great strategic thinkers Jomini and Clausewitz developed their revolutionary ideas in response to the French Revolution.
Gat argues that World War One's massive slaughter forced a paradigm shift from Clausewitz's ideas to the new idea of limited war. But Julian Corbett, limited war's greatest theorist, first published his ideas before 1914. Corbett argued, like Clausewitz, that wars were means to an end, continuations of policy. But he showed that wars could take many forms, with differing limits, depending on their political aims.
Gat exaggerates the importance of J. F. C. Fuller in the interwar period. Fuller plagiarised Ernest Swinton, who first proposed using tanks offensively in numbers to achieve breakthrough. Fuller fantasised that tanks alone could win wars, without infantry and combined arms.
Gat also over praises Basil Liddell Hart, who idealised limited war, just part of Britain's military experiences. In the 1930s, Hart predicted that wars would become more humane and rational: World War Two was the most destructive war in history.
In this war, the greatest test of Britain's survival as an independent and sovereign nation, Fuller and Hart encouraged Hitler to attack the Soviet Union. Hart opposed the Allies' policy of total war against Hitler, and called for Britain to collaborate with Hitler. Hart claimed that victory was unattainable and that fighting Hitler would `only lead to mutual suicide, and the collapse of civilisation'.
Gat asserts that Hart pioneered a `Western way' of warfare, of limited war, containment and economic coercion, based on the reactionary dreams of European and World Federation. But there is no such `Western way': Western ruling classes waged all sorts of wars against national liberation struggles, annihilatory against Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, relatively limited against Malaya and Kenya.

Invaluable Tool For A Pastor's Library

As I work through Isaiah, I have come to appreciate this work more and more. Motyer observes and explains literary artistic value in the text with a minimum of words. He also gives bits on textual criticism, but I find they are sometimes harder for me to grasp what he is referring to unless I have dug into the textual problem already.

But the heart of this commentary is not about literary design or textual criticism. The heart of this commentary is about explaining in a well reasoned way the basic exegetical idea paragraph after paragraph with references to related issues sprinkled throughout the commentary.

One negative is that the format of the text is condensed in my view and therefore a little less comfortable to read than say the NICOT or NIVAC formats.

This past Sunday I worked on Isaiah 38-39. Motyer sees that as the beginning of a new section that ends in Isaiah 55. His outline is interesting and his explanations defending his outline are good. In Isaiah 38-39 he deals with Hezekiah's predicatment and outlines the passage with a Chiastic structure that points to Hezekiah's deeper challenge that seems to underlie the text. I found that in this passage at least, Motyer's comments were more illuminating than even the excellently written NIVAC by Oswalt or the NICOT by Oswalt. Motyer sees the Chiasm in Isaiah 38-39 as pointing to Hezekiah's difficulty in obeying the point of the law where Judah is not to make alliances with foreign nations.

The poetic structure with an emphasis on the dedication of Hezekiah in 38:8-22 and the defection of Hezekiah in 39:1-2 is a fresh and preaching alliterated point that I actually ended up using in my sermon on Hezekiah.

My respect for this author has been on the rise the more I look into his work. He packs a lot into every page. Excellent book, well worth the shekels.

An excellent work.

I have not finished this book, however I am well into it and am thoroughly enjoying it. Of all the theologies/commentaries I've read on Isaiah this is either the best or one of them. He interacts with a lot of Rikki Watt's material, Kaiser and a little F.F Bruce. He is a conservative scholar whose work should not be overlooked.
I am a senior at a biblical university with plans to go on to seminary. This book will not leave my side as I study Isaiah in the future. Often times conservative scholars are looked down upon for poor scholarship, but Motyer's work is certainly erudite. Isaiah is rich in vocabulary and fond of metaphor which Motyer captures well. In addition, one does not need a working knowledge of Hebrew grammar/vocabulary to keep up with his teaching. I would recommend this book for the pastor, adult sunday school teacher or serious student. Enjoy!

Everything you need to know to tell flannel board stories.

I train childcare teachers and use this book when teaching how to tell flannel board stories. The author gives guidelines for using the flannel board story with different age groups. A total of 50+ stories, poems, and songs are included, some appropriate for the younger child, some for ages five and older. The selection is varied, including familiar stories such as "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "The Three Pigs". Also included are folktales which are less familiar but equally wonderful. For each story, the author shares special directions for using the flannel board characters and how to include the children in the telling of that story. For me, a special feature of this book are the patterns for the characters--they are large, clear, and easy to duplicate.

As a volunteer storyteller for our local library's storytime, I have recently looked through this book and found it to be a superb addition to our resource section. Here are 4 reasons I have found this book to be helpful enough to own my own copy. 1. It is instantly useable, no need to tweak and edit the stories. 2. The stories lend themselves to puppets as well. 3. The stories and rhymes are simple and easy to use. 4. The book itself is nicely organized.

Christmas gifts for the grandchildren...

I purchased The Flannel Board Storytelling Book as the first step in making flannel board stories for my grandchildren. I am very pleased with this purchase. The figures are simple. Though preparation of the stories will be time-consuming, I believe first teaching the stories, then letting my grandchildren teach me will be well worth the price I paid for this book. It is a collection of both well-loved stories from my childhood, and many others that teach values and offer the opportunity to talk about life situations. I'm excited for Christmas. R ALLEN

AWFUL!!!

We used this textbook in a college course entitled, "Teaching a Diverse Population."

To a person, we all thought this book was awful.

My biggest problem with this piece of work is that the author expects the reader to agree to a line of logic that is not supported by facts. Sure, there are facts interwoven in each chapter, but the facts don't match the logic.

If I turned in any of these chapters as an argumentative essay to my English Composition professor, I'd surely receive less than an "A."

Additionally, I could have done without the four letter words such as cun* (you fill in the last letter).

Couldn't give it a ZERO Which it Deserves

This book is HORRIBLE. If I wern't forced to use it in class I wouldn't even touch it. It is terribly slanted in a manner that a previous reviewer got right on. The whole book seems to be based on an incorrect perception that the European White Male is the reason for all of our social ills, not just racism.

An example is how Koppelman drolls on that the White European caused all the hatred in the Mexican population by stealing the Mexican land. He fails to cover the part a large majority of Mexicans are a mix of Native Americans and Spanish Conquistidor's. The Conquistidors plundered the land and slaughtered millions of Native Americans. So he overlooks the ills of the one race to set the Mexican up as a pure victim in this matter. His views are totally flawed throughout this book. And I am not letting Goodhart off the hook either.

Bottom line is: Unless you are absolutely required to use this book; DO NOT buy it. For a great perspective on diversity, see if you can find the aged, but fair and balanced "What you are is where you were when" by Morris Massey.

Understanding Human Differences is not the answer to promoting diversity, it promotes hate.

I am half hispanic and half white. So I have a Minority perspective as well as a white male perspective. Don't buy the hate!

Below average narrow-minded approach to clasroom diversity

How did this book disappoint? I will pick on a few examples

One thing I found particularly frustrating was the book's coverage of immigration and border issues. The authors did an acceptable job of covering economic diversity in the classroom; explaining how teachers unintentionally alienate poorer students. Unfortunately, the authors clearly live in the northeast and have spent very little time exploring the unique issues that Chicano students face (outside of glancing over the New York Times articles they read each morning), a disappointment considering this is the biggest diversity issue in schools today. Teachers alienate their Hispanic/Latino students every day by making no effort to understand their culture. For example, community property is a concept often overlooked, much to the disdain of the teacher or other students who don't understand why their belongings are "borrowed" without asking. Teachers also insult their students' families when they show frustration at their lack of concern for grades and college (hard work is often viewed by Hispanics as more important; after all, school doesn't pay the rent or buy groceries). The authors could have focused on every day issues such as these stemming from white Americans' world-famous ignorance of other cultures, instead they chose to use the tired crutch of racism, nationalism, or ethnocentrism as the source of all problems in the classroom.

I also wish the book had been more polished before it went to press. This book had two authors, and it clearly shows that they did little collaboration. The layout of chapters and writing style showed a lack of cohesion, especially when the individual authors repeatedly made conflicting arguments in their respective chapters without making an effort to reconcile or even acknowledge their differences.

Later in the book, one of the authors decided to pretend to be a history professor (all while quoting tertiary revisionist political sources instead of scholarly work). I wont even get into the half-baked history in the last third of the book. All I will say is that I wish he/she would stick to education and do what he/she does best, work hard to keep public education stuck in the same rut it has been in since the 1970s.
