About the Author
Seth Jacobs is assistant professor in the Department of History at Boston College. He is the author of America's Miracle Man in Vietnam: Ngo Dinh Diem, Religion, Race, and U.S. Intervention in Southeast Asia. In 2001, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations honored him with its Stuart Bernath Prize for the best article published in the field of diplomatic history.

Succinct, readable overview of Diem's rule

This is not, as the author himself points out in the bibliography, a biography of Ngo Dinh Diem, but an attempt to balance out the previously written accounts of his rule. As such, it succeeds, providing the interested reader with a quick and comprehensible overview of the nature of Diem's regime and why it ultimately collapsed. Jacobs tries to remain even-handed but ultimately judges Diem's rule a failure and basically admits the US was justified in its coup.
Jacobs's narrative proceeds in a logical, well-organized manner, outlining how Diem won American support, how he instituted his government, how he carried on an oppressive, tyrannical regime in Vietnam while presenting his efforts as an anti-Communist crusade abroad, and how the whole thing came crashing down in the 1960s. He uses a scholarly yet very readable style, making sure all his points are well understood and driving the point of each chapter home. As such, it's a nice account of a controversial figure, but hardly essential - a lot of these same points can be obtained in other, more broad histories. I found the earlier parts of the book somewhat more useful, as the fall of Diem has been chronicled thoroughly elsewhere (although that's an interesting story too, of course). Jacobs makes it clear just how narrow Diem's base of support in the beginning was - neither the Vietnamese, nor the French, nor even many Americans cared for him. That he would choose to respond to his by tearing into his domestic opponents and casting off the emperor comes off as incredibly gutsy and daring, although one could just as easily consider it reckless and foolish. Beyond this, the chapters on "Operation Passage to Freedom" (the population transfer from North to South Vietnam) and Diem's flawed land reform programs have some good information, and are essential to understand later conflicts in Vietnam. About the only thing I can really complain about is the introduction, which is sort of redundant with the final chapter and spoils the ending, and the total lack of information about Diem's outreach efforts to other anti-Communist countries, something Americans persistently ignore.
In short, a good book, but nothing special.

In depth, informative. Tells of the other forces that sponsored the Viet Nam conflict; namely the influence of the Catholic Church, the disappointment of France and the corruption and incompetency of the South Viet Nam government. As an American I would like to say I am sorry.
