`Neera Chandhoke is a member of an unusually gifted cohort of political theorists from New Delhi (the others include Rajeev Bhargava, Gurpreet Mahajan, and Niraja Gopal Jayal) whose writings are not as well known in what we think of as "the West" as they deserve to be. Having survived the brutal cold of Washington's winter, the Hawaiian delegation welcomed spring. Having survived yet another campaign to annex their homeland to America, they took a brief moment to remark cheerfully on the survival of Hawai'i as an independent nation. Perhaps the moment for America to take over Hawai'i had come and gone, and perhaps the Hawaiians could now get their country back.

The queen of Hawai'i had been living in a hotel in Washington during most of 1897, and the delegates of the native political societies had arrived toward the end of the year, in the dead of winter, to support her with the most ambitious of their many petitions. The delegation had come from mass rallies in Hawai'i against annexation that had been attended by thousands of Hawaiians, who now were nearly one quarter of the earth's surface away. At one of the rallies against annexation, a speaker had likened the Kingdom of Hawai'i to a house, which had been built by the great king, Kamehameha. A handful of foreigners had taken over the house, and they had given the Hawaiians a lei stand in return, where the Hawaiians were expected to reside and sell flowers.

Would the Hawaiians live in the lei stand? "Agole," the crowd had shouted back. No, never.

When the delegates to Washington closed their eyes they could remember the faces, the families, and the petitions passing from hand to hand for people to sign their names. As a result of the petition drive, the Hawaiian delegation had arrived in Washington with thirty-eight thousand signatures protesting America's proposed annexation of their country, and they were eager to call the petitions to the attention of influential Americans. Considering that only forty thousand or so Hawaiians survived, it was surely true, as their opponents said, that some of the signatures were duplicates, and some were the names of children, and perhaps some were names of the dead. But the petitions nonetheless were a virtual census of the Hawaiian nation, as Hawaiians still called themselves, and the petitions said eloquently that in spite of everything that had happened, they wanted to be what they had been, a nation in the world system of nations.

This book is a revelation! I thought I knew quite a bit about the annexation of Hawaii into the United States, but Tom Coffman has gone back to original sources and come up with a new and compelling account. This book shows how the annexation of Hawaii was engineered by American planters and how mainland public opinion was manipulated into accepting the takeover. It also places the annexation in context of the imperialism and colonalism that was sweeping the world in the late 19th century. Finally, it shows the resistance of the Hawaiian people to being submerged in the American nation and gives us an idea of what is behind the sovereignty movement in Hawaii today. This book is not an easy read -- it's packed with detail and unfamiliar names and places. But if you want to look beyond "beautiful Hawaii" and read some little known US and world history, you will find this book fascinating.

Excellent book revealing context and process of annexation

The annexation of Hawai`i by the U.S., as well as the preceeding overthrow of Hawai`i by U.S. military forces and the installation of a republic, is not widely understood. In fact, most sources either gloss over the overthrow and annexation or else present a grossly misleading presentation which has worked its way from the writings of those who originally orchestrated the events into the average history book.
Tom Coffman goes through much effort to review not only the body of secondary sources, but also a very large body of primary sources available from the records of the Republic, the various Hawaiian civic bodies, the original newspapers (including the Hawaiian language newspapers), the letters of American businessmen and politicians, and other sources. The synthesis he builds reveals a very insightful and different story of how and why Hawai`i went from an internationally-recognized autonomous nation to a property of the U.S. In contrast to the claims of many sources, the overthrow and annexation were against the wishes of the vast majority of Hawaiians, whose opinions are recorded in petitions stored at the U.S. National Archives as well as in the newspapers and Hawaiian-language writings of the time.
Coffman goes well beyond merely correcting many of the common misconceptions about the stability of the monarchy and the opinions of the people of Hawai`i. He presents insights into the thinking and motivations of all involved parties, from various segments of the population of Hawai`i to businessmen and politicians in the U.S., and explains how Americans in Hawai`i and the U.S. worked together on the common goal of overthrowing and annexing Hawai`i.
This is an important text for anybody trying to understand the history or current events of Hawai`i. It is also of interest to anybody who is interested in American politics at the turn of the century, as Manifest Destiny changed its goal from expanding to fill the continental U.S. into the U.S. exerting itself as an imperial global superpower.

short and sweet

This is a very slender book, but it has some of the best descriptions of the doshas, or humors, I have ever read.
The constitutional type test is the best I have seen. Yes, even better than Chopra's (though his is very good).
The book painstakingly describes each physical and temperamental trait and how it may mainfest in the individual according to his doshic make-up. Outstanding.
The other information is not very lengthy, but I think this book is incredibly valuable for what it does contain: treatment of the doshas in incomparable detail.

About the Author
Amanda Sohan was born in the heart of New York City to a set of parents from British Guyana. While growing up with one foot steeped in the strict cultural boundaries her parents held dear and the other rooted in modern teenage American angst, reading and writing became the main medium for her journey toward freedom. In her dark poetry she grew to love the meaningful depths hidden in a collaboration of words. There was nothing more odd than the music she and her only sister Rowena grew up with; two American, West Indian girls bumping to the sound of Eazy E as Video Music Box flashing across the tube. Her teenage years, a graphic rebellion of words that could sneak under the radar of her parents watchful eye. How ironic that her first work would be a gentle, humorous children's book. But stay turned as she intends to showcase her more adult side in her second book entitled HIM.

Cinderella Like You've Never Seen Her

I loved this book. The writing is smooth. I immediately felt drawn into the story world and empathized with both Trystan and Ramsey. I thought both characters were well-drawn and the romance was definitely swoon-worthy. I desperately wanted them to be together.

I'm a huge fan of fairytale retellings, but Cinderella has never been my favorite story. Despite that, I absolutely loved what Davidson did with the tale, especially in adding a whole layer of political intrigue. It kept me guessing and made the familiar story feel fresh and new. As a heroine, Trystan was strong and independent, but also had a great capacity to love and be loved. Ramsey was smart and strong, too. They were a well-matched team.

Fans of fairytales retold should definitely read this story. If you loved the movie Ever After or are a fan of Robin McKinley or Melanie Dickerson's tales, definitely add Traitor's Masque to the top of your to read list!

This novel was a fantastic debut from an author who clearly understands how to develop a complex and entrancing character and world within which her characters exist. Though at times the prose slightly overwhelmed the message of the sentence, this book was full of beautiful language used in refreshing ways. Most YA fiction leaves something to be desired in terms of maturity of tone, but Traitor's Masque does not disappoint in this category. While the focus was on young characters, this book exudes sophistication and can be enjoyed by readers of any age. The storyline was perfectly paced and kept me guessing. I can't wait for the second installment!

It's just days until Christmas and not a gift has been wrapped or a cookie baked because I have not been able to get my nose out of this book! The complex and captivating characters, gripping storyline, and vividly described world of Andar made for a delightful escape. A fairy tale, yes, but one with depth, intelligence, and suspense. An excellent debut from Kenley Davidson; I'll be anticipating her next book.

Very good overview of Genesis

I have studied Genesis a lot in the past, and was looking for a good book for a small group study. Genesis is the basis for almost everything for Christians and Jews alike, and there is so much information it is daunting to try to teach/study it. However, this is an excellent overview book. Personally I am a Creationist, and this book is not at odds with that. But it also is not pushy about what you believe about creation, and presents several theories (ie, day-age, gap theory, etc) and gives quotes from several well-know authors/speakers. Same is true for flood: Was it world-wide or local? It gives both points of view.

If you are looking for a book that revises what the book of Genesis says, this is NOT it. There are plenty of those out there. The book holds true to the traditional Biblical meaning of Genesis, giving us the basis for religion, marriage, family, government, etc, while leaving some room for interpretation on controversial points. Highly recommended.

Evans and Herzog, both professors at the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, NY, present ten essays on a wide range of topics, from the racial integration of the sport to the role of women and baseball. The authors, including Stanley Hauerwas (theological ethics, Duke Univ. Divinity Sch.), Christopher H. Evans (church history, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity Sch.), and Tracy J. Thank God for Baseball

I expected a review of the phenomenon of baseball in American culture. What I didn't expect was good scholarship and fine theological reflection! Both are there. The essays are wonderful and examine the parallels between Christianity and baseball from the perspectives of history, ethics, and hope. Read it before your next trip to the ball park!

Complicated but compelling

I wound up picking and choosing chapters of this book because often got lost in the theological issues. The chapters on Jackie Robinson and Rickey, Christy and Pete, and Shoeless Joe were very interesting. My own father was a young mill league player in 1919 and even though I was a "girl" he loved to share with me the stories of the glory days of the game. This book brought much of him back.

While I have always been a strong supporter of Title IX, I'm not sold on the interest among women to play professional baseball. Likely the WMBA among other pro groups are more compelling interests for our gender. Not really my call, but the ladies really did not convince me of the need for a pro ladies league.

Admittedly I had to make myself stick with the "Old Man and the Sea" along with the other theology based chapters, I just could not wrap my brain around some of the reasoning. No matter, I'm of the opinion that we do need to attempt to understand stuff that appears incomprehensible and challenging.

Now, let's get busy and get Shoeless Joe in the Hall of Fame. The book made a great rational case for righting a wrong.

A good book that did not quite meet all my expectations.

I read this book as I continue to develop my own theology of baseball. I enjoyed reading this book but wish it would have gone a little deeper. The author's main theological issue involves creating an inclusive kingdom which he compares with Jackie Robinson breaking through the color barrier in baseball. For a deeper theological connection, I suggest John Sexton's Baseball as a Road to God.
