From the Inside Flap
It is not easy to teach well. Stephen Brookfield describes teaching as resembling a kind of "muddling through" that involves us negotiating moments of surprise as we learn our own truth about the realities of the classroom or online experience. But that doesn't mean that great teaching can't be achieved. Four core assumptions inform this book: that skillful teaching boils down to whatever helps students learn, that the best teachers adopt a critically reflective stance towards their practice, that the most important knowledge we need to do good work is an awareness of how students are experiencing their own learning and our teaching, and that we should always aim to treat students as adults. To that it could be added: You can become a great teacher.
In this completely rewritten edition of the bestselling classic, Brookfield restates some of the chief insights of previous editions but interprets them for new contexts, such as online learning environments and increasingly diverse classrooms. He uncovers what students most value in their teachers—that they are authoritative allies—and explains how one can develop and demonstrate the credibility and authenticity required to fill that role. Six brand new chapters cover the important topics of teaching critical thinking, using play and creativity in the classroom, teaching in teams, helping students take responsibility for learning, teaching about racism, and exercising teacher power responsibly.
Brookfield offers inspiration and down'to'earth advice to new and seasoned teachers alike. By putting the philosophy and strategies presented here into action, educators can transform the unpredictable chaos of the college classroom into an environment of engaged, authentic, and successful learning.

Very solid book and useful "motivational" tool for college-level (and others) instructors
By Nathan Webster
I liked the conversational tone of this book, and I think it would be an excellent resource for college instructors looking for some good ideas or just a different perspective that's presented in a more informal way than SO many similar texts. I've been instructing at the college level for 8 years, but feel like a rookie every day; so a book as upbeat and on-point as this one is a good one to take a look at.
That's the strength of the book that Stephen Brookfield remembers that he is talking to an audience that actually has to go into a classroom and deal with a roomful of disparate agendas, skills levels, interest, etc. I've read plenty of teaching books, but they're often so theory-based that it's like the writers forgot that real people are actually involved! So I was very glad for the tone of this book, and how Brookfield was willing and ready to admit his own flaws and mistakes, but also successes.
A chapter on teaching racism, for example, was useful for some reminders of how to 'teach it' and not 'preach it.' It's an important subject, but it's so easy to lose students if it seems like we're just berating them, or just as bad, they think they know what we want to hear and just parrot it back to us.
He encourages using personal perspective to a point - but wisely reminded readers that self-deprecation can be useful, but not too far. In the end, we're still the experts and need to present ourselves like that. I know I get turned off when a speaker seems to be too humble - I want them to be experts so I should listen! It's something for me to be aware of too. And I liked how Brookfield had no problems explaining mistakes he had made. Teaching is such a humbling experience, and sometimes I'm like "I'm terrible and the students hate me and I don't know what I'm doing and I'm obviously a total fraud," so it's always nice to see a longtime in instructor admit to those feelings too! The benefit of course is that we can recognize what did/didn't work, go back the next day, or next semester and try something brand new. And the semester starts again this Monday! Eek!
Very solid book, with lots of good examples and anecdotes and a great writing style. Four stars? Five stars? In the end, the book can't do the work for us, and so I like it - from a bit of a distance like all the references and material I use.

Reading this is like having a mentor to help you through your most challenging situations
By Leanne
I ordered this book from Amazon's Vine program since one of Steven Brookfield's previous books, Discussion as a Way of Teaching: Tools and Techniques for Democratic Classrooms, is one of the most-loved and most-used books in my collection of pedagogy books. This version of _The Skillful Teacher_ is a new edition of a previously published book, and I've found it to be incredibly helpful.
Although I'm about to begin my twenty-second year in the college classroom, I'm always on the lookout for new books to enhance my skills, and this book does not disappoint. As Brookfield explains in the introduction, this new edition (which coincides with his forty-fifth year of teaching!) involved a complete re-writing of the previous edition, and now includes six brand-new chapters on topics such as handling sensitive topics in the classroom, using "play" as a mode of teaching, working in an online environment, and integrating critical thinking.
Since I'm about to start the new fall semester in two days, reading this book today was incredibly helpful and motivating. It covers a wide range of topics (see the Table of Contents in the "Look Inside" feature for a list of each chapter), while delving into good depth with each one. As I read this book with pencil in hand, I made sure to make notes of places that I know I will come back to in the future.
I also really appreciated Brookfield's conversational, personal tone. As he explains in the introduction, he decided to adopt this colleague-to-colleague voice to let us know we're not alone when we encounter difficult days. As he also notes in the intro, this book "is a survival manual to help readers navigate the recurring and inevitable dilemmas, problems, and contradictions they face in their work. It is designed to reduce the mistaken and unjustified sense of guilt many of us feel when things don't go as they should and our classrooms seem out of control."
Whether you're a novice or experienced professor -- or somewhere in between -- if those sentences resonate with you -- as they did for me -- then I'm sure you'll appreciate the ideas, suggestions, and techniques in this book. I know I will return to it again and again, just as I still do with the other Brookfield book I own.

Teaching up close and personal
By R. DelParto
Stephen D. Brookfield writes with expertise and seasoned knowledge of essential daily activities that have worked or have been effective in the classroom. The Skillful Teacher on Technique, Trust, and Responsiveness in the Classroom may be a mouthful for a title but simply spells everything out of what the book is about. Although the first edition was published 25 years ago, Brookfield offers an enormous amount of additional information in the third edition that shows how much has changed. He brings learning and teaching to the twentieth century and hopefully beyond in this edition.
The book contains 20 chapters of helpful information for those teaching in a traditional or online classroom setting. Every chapter provides greater insight for the teacher and the learner during all points of the learning process. Brookfield elaborates on alternative approaches but always spotlights both ends of the spectrum from educational and to instructional and the necessary resources and tools that have worked or may have needed tweaking. And he is not afraid to admit what classroom activities may not have been effective in the past, but stresses three important points that every teacher should consider when stepping into the classroom: find energy and courage by encouragement, strength, and inspiration; giving every opportunity available to allow students to learn the material being taught. Although applied within the business world, Brookfield suggests emotional intelligence comes in handy as well in the classroom. Most of the methods that Brookfield discusses focus on student participation and very brief written exercises before or during the end of class as a way to provide feedback or to assess if the students have grasped the topic of the day, this comes by way of questionnaires. Besides written work, technology is also highlighted and welcomed in his classrooms, especially online classroom methods, real time feedback in the form of social media such as Twitter, texting, email, although he does mention Facebook, but mobile phone usage is also part of the communication lines between professor and student in the classroom, and Skype. Each of the techniques are interesting, but there is one chapter in the book that may differ in terms of culture on particular college campuses that relate to diversity, the chapter on race and the resources available and experiences that Brookfield and others have faced may not apply; however, issues of sexual assault and bullying may have been included in the discussion. In essence, just about everything that one can imagine or have experienced as minor stumbling blocks in terms of learning, Brookfield has touched upon and has provided as much helpful information as possible.
In the final analysis of The Skillful Teacher, it is a highly recommended resource that may be referred to more than once. Each of the chapters provided a breath of information for educators that may teach in a traditional or online classroom, and may want to apply new techniques to consider in an ever-changing educational climate.
