Zack & Caeli: A PTSD love story

I received this book as a bonus off another book. At first I thought it was just going to be another one of those insta-lust romances...which it was. The attraction was off the charts for Caeli & Zack when they first met at the burger joint that Caeli works in. She thought he was just the typical jock at first but there was an attraction brewing between them. Caeli is working for her uncle along with her 3 evil cousins to pay off a debt incurred by her parents. Of course they all treat her like dirt and a slave. Zack comes to her defense in the parking lot after her evil cousins verbally abuse her and Zack single-handedly takes care of her troll cousins. He ends up meeting her back at her apartment and the sparks begin even after much protest from Caeli. They embark in a torrid night together. At first Zack just thinks of her as a one night of release from his demons and he has major demons. But the thing about Caeli is that her pureness and goodness seems to penetrate Zack's darkness. To Zack, Caeli represents an angel of light to his dark life. Zack is a former soldier who fought in Afghanistan and apparently is suffering from PTSD. He gets through his darkness through fighting and sex to forget his pain. Even though this was a very hot erotic romance, I liked the fact that there was a story to go with it...in fact a very deep story about a damaged person's coping mechanism. I enjoyed reading this surprise bonus story very much. It had the best of both: hotness and a storyline. You end up rooting for Zack and wondering when he will let someone into his damaged world. You root for Caeli to stand up for herself against her family. You see how the hero steps up to protect the heroine; how he ends up hurting her because he is reluctant to let her know about his story; you see the military camaraderie rallying around each other; you see how insta-lust turns into deeper love; you see how Zack deals with his PTSD and make it work for him; and you get an wonderful HEA at the end. What more can you want from a romance story? Maybe wishing the book was a tad bit longer? All in all, a lovely romance with Hot sex! :)

Bad Boy!

I received this book as a bonus from another author for an honest review.

This was a great storyline, and I loved how the bad boy was conceptualized! Not only does this story involve romance, humor, violence, but it was full of sex, sarcasm, and shenanigans. This is not the first book I read by this author, Kelly Favor, but I must say, this was awesome. I loved the characters of Zack Wild and Caeli Powers. Zack has been back from Afghanistan for two years trying to forget his buddies from the war, and all he does is drink, fight, and f** women—never getting close to anyone until he meets Caeli. Caeli works at a burger restaurant, which her uncle owns, to try to pay off her parent’s debt. She waits on Zack and friends, but Caeli finds herself quite attracted to Zack and the feeling is mutual with some sizzling chemistry. Her uncle and his three sons always treat Caeli dreadful. Zack intervenes and threatens her cousins when he sees how abusive they are treating her. There are several twists and turns within the story that makes it interesting. You will revel with delight in this raucous story with an erotic flare for the sensuous adult in you! This book was well written by Kelly Favor with a blistering hot look into Zack Wild—the name says it all! The book will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end.

Caeli and Zack's stormy beginning

I was given this book as a bonus at the end of an ARC by another Arthur and it was so good I had to post a review.
I am a big fan of Kelly Favor but I have to say she knocked this one out of the park. I think it's by far the best of her books and I think I've read them all.
I was already in lust with Zack Wild because he was so protective of Caeli Powers but when I discovered he had a military background I was also in love with him.
The attraction was there between Zack and Caeli right from the beginning but both were determined that it should not be love. (they both lost)
After rescuing Caeli from her family's abusive treatment of her Zack set out to show her how she should be treated by people that really cared about her.
After a few back and forth, she/he is just a girl/guy no different than any others they eventually realize the attraction is not something they either can fight anymore so decide to see where it goes.
This book is filled with violence, adventure, lust and romance. If you like any of these things in a book you will not be disappointed.
If you like romance between the girl and the guy you will not be disappointed.
Thank you for another fabulous book Kelly and I look forward to reading your next fabulous one. .

Epstein, a public health specialist and molecular biologist who has worked on AIDS vaccine research, overturns many of our received notions about why AIDS is rampant in Africa and what to do about it. She charges that Western governments and philanthropists, though well-meaning, have been wholly misguided, and that Africans themselves, who understand their own cultures, often know best how to address HIV in their communities. Most significant is Epstein's discussion of concurrent sexual relations in Africa. Africans often engage in two or three long-term concurrent relationships—which proves more conducive to the spread of AIDS than Western-style promiscuity. Persuade Africans to forgo concurrency for monogamy, and the infection rate plummets, as it did in Uganda in the mid-1990s. On the other hand, ad campaigns focused on condom use helped imply falsely that only prostitutes and truck drivers get AIDS. In addition, Epstein examines what she calls the "African earthquake": social and economic upheaval that have also eased the spread of HIV. Epstein is a lucid writer, translating abstruse scientific concepts into language nonspecialists can easily grasp. Some countries in Africa report that approximately one-third of their adult populations are infected with HIV. Epstein wondered how such a state of affairs came about. Seeking answers, she contracted with a biotechnical company to go to Africa and work toward discovering an AIDS vaccine. What she subsequently learned exploded some preconceived and widely shared notions about AIDS, about how African culture all but ensures its spread, and about what might be a deceptively simple answer to the complex question of how to stem that spread. Her absorbing report reveals governmental inefficiencies and medical bureaucracies and social structures that have done nothing to slow the epidemic's pace—and may be accelerating it. Besides the epidemic's social and medical aspects, she discusses the business of AIDS, and she examines the mystery of how the HIV infection rate dropped some 70 percent between 1992 and 1997 in Uganda and the Kagera region of Tanzania; she believes that the invisible cure involved in that plunge provides clues to resolving the issue of AIDS in Africa generally. An important contribution to addressing this ongoing tragedy

I'm an American doctor working in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I can attest to the substance of much of the material presented in this book and the importance of its message, specifically that norms of sexual behavior in this culture need to be discussed and changed for prevention efforts to begin to be effective. As the author aptly discusses, numerous aid organizations, flush with good intentions and funds, seem to operate on the periphery of this central issue. One of the most disturbing lessons of my time in the midst of this horrible tragedy is the realization that the stigma attached to this disease in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa remains so severe that many people prefer to die than to find out that they have AIDS, a point the author seems to get across through with many informative anecdotes. The fundamental thesis is that we need to begin to engage the leaders within these societies at a fundamental cultural level regarding relationships and sexual behavior. No small task. I would highly recommend this book as the first read for someone trying to understand why AIDS is so unbelievably prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. As of today, for every person we enroll in antiretroviral treatment in rural KwaZulu-Natal, five will be newly infected. It's very depressing to see so many people dying from a preventable disease--1,000 people die of it every day in South Africa alone.

"As a woman living with HIV," says Beatrice Were of Uganda, "I am often asked whether there will ever be a cure for HIV/AIDS, and my answer is that there is already a cure. It lies in the strength of women, families and communities who support and empower each other to break the silence around AIDS and take control of their sexual lives." With a vaccine against HIV far off in the distant future (if at all), and with treatment of AIDS in the two-thirds world difficult, expensive, and limited in effect, the name of the game in HIV-AIDS is prevention. But in places like Africa, which is the focus of Helen Epstein's book, prevention is not as simple as it sounds. As she notes in her appendix, measles, syphilis, tuberculosis, and other entirely preventable diseases still kill millions of people even though they can be treated for pennies.

Why has HIV-AIDS ravaged eastern and southern Africa like no place on earth? "In 2005," she writes, "roughly 40 percent of all those infected with HIV lived in just eleven countries in this region-- home to less than 3 percent of the world's population." In some of these countries the infection rates have hit 30 percent, decimating the general population, while in the west, for example, rates hover at about 1% and are generally limited to specific demographics like gay men, intravenous drug users, and commercial sex workers." Theories abound about this discrepancy, but Epstein argues a narrow point, that Africa's problem is not profound promiscuity, or even the normal culprits of high risk groups like prostitutes or truck drivers, but instead a social phenomenon of "concurrent partners." That is, Africans do not have more sexual partners than in other places in the world, and nowhere near as many as gay men among whom infection rates are exponentially lower; but they do have a small number of sexual partners concurrently, at the same time, rather than one at a time or sequentially. This has set the virus loose among the general population like a runaway train.

And why has prevention been so elusive? Epstein appeals to what she calls the comprehensive "social ecology" of denial, silence, shame, adverse gender roles, and stigma about HIV-AIDS. Western-initiated and donor-funded programs will always be less successful than listening to Africans themselves and their own suggestions about how to address the problem. Uganda, of course, has been the amazing success story in this regard, and the subject of bitter debates about why. In 1989 Uganda had one of the highest infection rates in the world, but from about 1992-2002 the infection rate dropped by two-thirds. The key to the success, argues Epstein, was not in the billions of dollars from the west, but from the "collective efficacy" of a "shared calamity," by people helping each other and talking openly about the scourge. In particular, "partner reduction," she says, and not the much vaunted condom use, helped Ugandans to address the cultural phenomenon of concurrent partners. Partner reduction, as one worker described it, is thus the "neglected middle child of the ABC approach" of abstinence, fidelity ("be faithful"), and condoms. Zero Grazing, as Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni called for, is thus the silent cure already available, however valuable other prescriptions.

Epstein, a molecular biologist who has written widely on public health issues, combines rigorous science and the anecdotal evidence of substantial field research. She's clearly as comfortable with and interested in meeting with a dozen African widows under a mango tree as she is in the latest results of a demographic study. Her book has received strong reviews in the New York Times and the New York Review of Books (where her mother was a co-editor before she died), and also a rebuttal of sorts on the home page of UNAIDS that was provoked by her somewhat conspiratorial stance toward research that she argues they ignored because it didn't fit their partisan ideology.

If you liked Rachel Carson's Silent Spring or And The Band Played On, you will love this book. It is readable, impassioned and brilliant, and despite its savage denunciation of the failures of the West to deal with the AIDS crisis, it is an essentially optimistic work. Publishers Weekly in a starred review said it will save lives, and that is not hyperbole. I urge anyone who is interested in the greatest medical crisis of our time; anyone who is interested in Africa; anyone who is outraged by the failure of the UN, the WHO and the Bush administration to deal with this tragedy, to buy this book and give it to your friends. It is the kind of book that will change peoples' minds and will move continents. It will be read for years to come...

A valuable handbook for anyone planning, deploying or using social and collaborative tools

I read an advance copy of Jacob Morgan's book. Jacob says: "The purpose of this book is to act as a guide for executives, decision makers, and those involved with collaborative initiatives at their organizations". I believe he hits the mark with a book of lasting value, as do reviewers including Vivek Kundra, former Chief Information Officer of the United States; Erik Brynjolf, MIT Center for Digital Business Director, and others.

Jacob organizes his book into three parts: The Opening, The Middle Game, and The End Game. The Opening chapters talk to people in organizations who are just getting started with their initiatives. It covers business drivers, case studies, evaluating risk, and getting the right people involved. The Middle Game chapters cover topics including defining goals to match your business, developing a strategy, vendor evaluation, dealing with resistance, rolling out a platform, and developing governance. The End Game chapters talk about strategies for sustaining and maintaining these initiatives in the long term, including a bonus chapter on Enterprise 2.0 with Andrew McAfee.

Jacob's book is based on his own analysis and research, including interviews, case studies and survey responses from 234 individuals around the world, working for companies ranging from 1,000 to over 100,000 employees, with responsibilities ranging from mid-level to C-level executives. The Collaborative Organization is vendor neutral, involving actual practitioners who are implementing collaborative tools and strategies for their organizations - not vendors or consultants.

Each chapter includes analysis, examples and a well-written Summary and Action items section, with actionable advice that you'll turn to often. Chapters include case studies, examples and results drawn from practitioner experience, not hand-wavy fluff.

It's a handbook you'll have on your desk for the next few years. I particularly like:

Chapter 2 - The First Step to Recovery is Admitting You have a Problem on business drivers and problems (20 pages)

Chapter 7 - The Adaptive Emergent Collaboration Framework practical advice on choosing and adapting approaches to match your business goals and culture (27 pages)

Chapter 8 - Resistance is Futile on barriers to success (13 pages)

Chapter 12 - Measures of Success, practical advice on measuring soft benefits, hard benefits, and defining business value (19 pages)

My company (Traction Software) decided to buy and give away free copies to 200 folk attending the 2012 Enterprise 20 conference in Boston. Jacob's book is vendor agnostic. We have no sponsorship or connection with Jacob other than respect for Jacob's work in general, and this book in particular.

Jacob answers basic and important questions on goals, capabilities, vendor selection, barriers to adoption, governance, objections, leadership, corporate culture and leadership.

I believe a well-educated customer our best friend - making it possible to have a serious and useful talk about our software and capabilities, rather than trying to cover those basic and important questions at the same time. Jacob does a better, more thorough, and more clearly objective job than we can. I can't insist that prospective customers read Jacob's book before talking to us, but if they do, they'll have a more productive conversation - with us or other vendors.

I recommend that other vendors in the Enterprise 2.0 / Social Business space refer prospects and customers to Jacob's book as well. It helps everyone.

Should have a different title

I found that the book was mostly about the implementation of tools to support behaviors that have long been understood to be helpful to organizations in improving performance. With regard to "long been understood" I cite two examples. (1) In 1952, providing direction for employee collaboration in the development of the magnetic disk memory [An International Historic Landmark] a guiding principle was "It is the most important assignment of every engineer in this laboratory to give assistance, in the form of consultation, experimentation or suggestions, when asked to by another engineer, and the second most important assignment is that of carrying forward the project to which he is assigned. " [The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, February 27, 1984]. (2) In 1965, Bell telephone Laboratories established an "online" database providing a summary of employee expertise in various fields, for use by all employees.
Not to detract from the usefulness of Mr. Morgan's provision of checklists for implementing tools to support collaboration, which checklists are quite comprehensive and very well thought out, I think the title should have been "A Guide to Implementation of Tools to Support Collaboration in Organizations."
It appears that The Strategic Guide to Solving Challenges to Collaboration in Organizations has yet to be written. Mr. Morgan does note that "Nonsupportive cultures at organizations can destroy efforts to build a collaborative organization; therefore, they must be addressed," but offers only the historical commentary with regard to what it takes to "address" them. (For example, it taking several disasters (bombing of embassies, 9/11) to get the Department of State to recognize that it needed to change. Such scenarios are sometimes labeled "burning platforms." What we still don't know is how to get organizations to change absent burning platforms. All that said, I'd recommend Mr. Morgan's book to those who are interested in tools to support collaboration, provided they have done their homework on the culture of their organizations.
One last thought - how do the events in Benghazi last fall reflect on the State Department's four year effort in building a collaborative organization?

Maybe THE Handbook for Harnessing an Organization's True Powers

With The Collaborative Organization, Jacob Morgan has written what might become THE handbook for companies, non-profits, and even government organizations trying to harness the amazing power of social interaction and cooperation among employees, partners, customers and other organizational stakeholders. It is dense with insight, practical advice, how-to suggestions, technology tips, and examples.

He was kind enough to let me see an advance copy and it took me some time to get through the whole thing, because it is literally packed with so much information and useful material. I highly recommend it to anyone wrestling with the task of empowering organization members to work together toward a common purpose. Well worth the time. You might even want to read it twice. I did.

A Worthwhile Journey

This book provides a thorough survey of pretty much all the arts (not just visual arts) using plenty of well-chosen examples, many examined in some depth.

The organization of the book generally has a chapter for each art form, with each chapter mostly organized into various themes. This complements other books organized according to an historical approach.

By the time one has progressed through the journey of the entire book, the diligent reader should come away enriched with new perspectives on life and reality.

The one downside of the book, which isn't minor, is that I found much of the writing to be unnecessarily complicated and tedious. I'm not saying that the authors needed to "dumb it down," but I do think they could have conveyed their message much more clearly without compromising its substance. It's as though they just adopted a clunky, somewhat highbrow style at the outset, got used to it, and than ran with it all the way through the book, forgetting the needs and wants of their audience in the process. Lest one think I'm being too critical, consider the book The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern, which is both enlightening and a joy to read.

The above issue brings my rating down to 4 stars, but I still certainly recommend the book because of the considerable value it brings to the reader. Just be prepared to be genuinely attentive as you read it. Your investment of time and effort will be well rewarded.
