It comprises both self- and other-reports in a long form (15-20 minutes) and a short form (4-5 minutes). Special features include an adult ADHD risk index in the long form. Complete instructions for scoring and interpreting the scale are provided.

Review
"The BDEFS is a much-needed, clinically relevant tool. This exceptionally well-written manual includes a detailed description of the scale's development, psychometric properties and norms, scoring, and clinical interpretation, as well as the forms themselves. The limited photocopy license clearly enhances the clinical utility of the BDEFS. All professionals responsible for assessing and understanding adults suffering the burden of executive dysfunction will find this scale highly useful and beneficial."--Rosemary Tannock, PhD, Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education; Department of Medicine, University of Toronto; and Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada

"Barkley has created a rating scale that is quick and easy to administer and score. The BDEFS provides valuable information regarding specific executive functioning deficits, including those found in ADHD. This scale does what a good assessment instrument should: not only does it answer questions regarding diagnosis, but it also helps clinicians identify target skills and behaviors for intervention."--Peg Dawson, EdD, Center for Learning and Attention Disorders, Seacoast Mental Health Center, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

"The BDEFS ushers in an era of more specific and comprehensive behavioral assessment of executive functioning difficulties encountered by adults during major functional activities. The scales are well designed to be both clinician and patient friendly. The content is broader than other available scales and the normative observations are carefully derived and extensive. Behavioral items are focused around common daily activities rather than clinical symptoms, and thus can be applied in a variety of settings. The combination of self- and other-report forms, as well as long and short forms, provides depth and flexibility. This scale is a powerful complement to traditional executive function tests."--Paul J. Eslinger, PhD, Department of Neurology, Penn State University Milton Hershey Medical Center

"Reliable, empirically based, and convenient to use for clinicians. Allow[s] a doctor to quantify behaviors that can't be readily observed in the clinic." (ADDitude Magazine 2011-02-03)

An Essential Tool for Therapists
By Patricia Robinson MFT
As a therapist and coach focused on individuals with Asperger's, autism and ADHD, I find that understanding the topic of Executive Function is central to helping clients make real progress. Russell Barkley, a leader in the field of ADHD and a pioneer in taking a scientific approach to the condition, has put together the most comprehensive and useful self assessment scales in his book Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS).

I find myself giving this assessment to almost all my adult clients. With Barkley's thorough analysis of different aspects of executive functioning, and comparative normed charts, individuals are able to understand just how severe their own deficits might be. With this information, we're able to come up with solid treatment options utilizing each client's own particular profile of strengths and weaknesses.

The best aspect of this scale is that it includes a limited license to photocopy the measurement tools. For individual therapists trying to work scientifically within the constraints of a private practice, it's invaluable to be able to apply science in a statistical valid way to a small caseload.

This book is indispensable for therapists dealing with clients with executive function issues.

Hitch-22: A Memoir, by Christopher Hitchens

Over the course of his 60 years, Christopher Hitchens has been a citizen of both the United States and the United Kingdom. He has been both a socialist opposed to the war in Vietnam and a supporter of the U.S. war against Islamic extremism in Iraq. He has been both a foreign correspondent in some of the world's most dangerous places and a legendary bon vivant with an unquenchable thirst for alcohol and literature. He is a fervent atheist, raised as a Christian, by a mother whose Jewish heritage was not revealed to him until her suicide.

In other words, Christopher Hitchens contains multitudes. He sees all sides of an argument. And he believes the personal is political.

This is the story of his life, lived large.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Christopher Hitchens stands alone among 20th- and 21st-century pundits for his enthusiastic enmity and political flip-flopping, but while he makes no apologies for his beliefs, he does acknowledge their intrinsic contradictions. Critics praised Hitchens's frankness in sharing the details of his mother's suicide and of his breezy bisexuality, but they simultaneously balked at his decision to omit significant people and events (i.e., his wives, his children, and his role in Bill Clinton's impeachment). They also objected to his relentless name-dropping and some overly dense prose, and a few were appalled that Hitchens would continue to insist that Saddam Hussein did indeed possess WMDs. Despite these complaints, Hitch-22 is a sharp, rebellious, and sometimes bawdy account of the making of a modern mastermind.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Hitchens, who, in his earlier books, has expressed contempt for both God and Mother Teresa (although not in that order), is often described as a contrarian. In fact, in his book Letters to a Young Contrarian (2001), he himself noted that he “can appear insufferable and annoying,” albeit without intending to. This memoir, bracing, droll, and very revealing, gives him yet another description: storyteller. He writes with a voice you can hear clearly, warmed by smoke and whiskey, and draws readers into his story, which proves as personal as it is political. As with many memoirs, it is not the public moments that are so fascinating, though there are plenty of those. Hitchens takes readers with him to Havana and Prague, Afghanistan and Iraq; tests himself by being waterboarded (he was disappointed in his early capitulation); and hobnobs with politicians and poets. He almost gets himself beaten up by defacing a poster in Iraq with a Hitler mustache. But the most intriguing stories are the personal ones, both from his early days, at home and at boarding school, and from his later life, when he learns that his mother was Jewish, which, if only technically, makes him Jewish as well. This revelation leads Hitchens on a quest to learn the story of his family, many of whom died in the Holocaust. How this new identity squares with his oft-proclaimed atheism sheds a different light on the meaning of religious identity. (He struggles mightily with his political identity as well.) Few authors can rile as easily as Hitchens does, but even his detractors might find it difficult to put down a book so witty, so piercing, so spoiling for a fight. He makes you want to be as good a reader as he is a writer. --Ilene Cooper

Review
"As contemptuous, digressive, righteous, and riotously funny as the rest of the author's incessant output, this memoir is an effective coming-of-age story, regardless of what one may think of the resulting adult . . . Hitchens paints a credible and even affecting self-portrait."―The New Yorker

"In this frank, often wickedly funny account, Hitchens traces his evolution as a fiercely independent thinker and enemy of people who are convinced of their absolute certainty ... Revealing and riveting."―Kirkus Review

"The most erudite and astute political and social commentator of this era has written a memoir that not only give the reader a view of the man behind the words but also a perceptive look at society over the past decades. Hitchens fascinates with the life he has lived and observed and, as always, relates his story with precision and consideration."―Bill Cusamano, Nicola's Books

"Hitch is as Hitch does, and he's not apologizing to anyone."―Drew Toal, Time Out New York

"[H]e has so many great quotes and quotables . . . that one cannot read his latest masterpiece for having to stop, find a pencil and page stickers in order to underline and signify his many remarks, each greater than the other."―Liz Smith, wowOwow.com

"Few writers can match his cerebral pyrotechnics. Fewer still can emulate his punch as an intellectual character assassin. It is hard not to admire the sheer virtuosity of his prose ... With Hitchens one simply goes along for the ride. The destination hardly matters."―Ed Luce, The Financial Times

"[D]electable, sassy fun . . . this book is intelligent and humane . . . Hitch-22 reminded me why I love the author of The Missionary Position, his fervent slapping of Mother Teresa, and his book about the war crimes of Henry Kissinger. Hitchens takes no prisoners, not even himself."―Mark Oppenheimer, The New Haven Review

"After reading Hitch-22, the only thing you can be sure of is that this flawed knight will not breathe contentedly unless he has a dragon to slay."―Ariel Gonzales, The Miami Herald

"... a fat and juicy memoir of a fat and juicy life."―Diana McLellan, The Washington Post

" ... a complex portrait of a public intellectual."―Alexandra Alter, The Wall Street Journal

"[An] extraordinary memoir by a truly astonishing figure of our literary age . . . This is among the most awaited books of the season, and while it confounds, misleads, exasperates and, on occasion, even bores, it also entertains to an almost shocking degree and illuminates almost as much. I laughed out loud - raucously and continuously - reading this book."―Jeff Simon, Buffalo News

"Hitch-22 is among the loveliest paeans to the dearness of one's friends . . . I've ever read. The business and pleasure sides of Mr. Hitchens's personality can make him seem, whether you agree with him or not, among the most purely alive people on the planet."―Dwight Garner, The New York Times

"If you find yourself in the midst of Christopher Hitchens's memoir and he hasn't said something to anger, inspire, or at least annoy you, wait a few pages. More the account of an intellectual and political odyssey than a conventional autobiography, HITCH-22 chronicles the critic-journalist-activist's often storm-tossed journey across the ideological spectrum. What makes it a most rewarding trip is that he's a traveling companion with a vigorous mind and a gift for sparkling prose."―www.bookreporter.com

"Whether he's dodging bullets in Sarajevo, dissing Bill Clinton, (with whom he says he shared a girlfriend at Oxford) or explaining his switch from leftist to Iraq war supporter, this foreign correspondent, pundit, and bon vivant makes for an enlightening companion. Give HITCH 22 an 11 out of 10 for smarts, then double it for entertainment value."―Kyle Smith, People Magazine

"a fascinating, absorbing book: the rare contemporary memoir that is the record of a life of true accomplishment and authentic adventure . . . Htitchens is bravely, or at least defiantly, candid about qualities his detractors might use to undermine or perhaps explain his love of war and his rabid hatred for religious people"―Lee Seigel, The New York Observer

"[Hitchens] indulges in both an endearing critical self-examniation and an action-packed adventure story."―The New Haven Advocate

"Christopher Hitchens may long to be a cogent man of reason, and he can certainly be a pitiless adversary. But he knows there are two sides to any decent match, and it's touching, in HITCH-22, to see how often he'll race to the other side of the court to return his own serve. Which may explain why, though he tries to be difficult, he's so hard to dislike."―The New York Times Book Review

"At its heart, Hitch-22 is a celebration of literature and a denunciation of idleness. "Hitchens is inarguably a man of action: He pursues history as it happens . . . eloquent, enlightening, and entertaining."―Gregg LaGambina, The Onion's AV Club

Hitchens expresses ambivalence about the term "public intellectual" but, as "Hitch-22" demonstrates, it suits him. The disputatious bon vivant is alive on the page, behind the speaker's podium and in "unglamorous houses on off-peak cable TV."―The Sunday Oregonian

Christopher Hitchens' memoir has the same nerve and frankness that first made me admire him . . . His perspective on becoming an American citizen is refreshing at a time when it's easy to become jaded about our role in the world.―Mark Rahner, The Seattle Times

"With the possible exception of Tom Wolfe and Maureen Dowd's, Christopher Hitchens' marvelous byline is the most archly kinetic in current-day American letters. Every article, review and essay has the romantic whiff of a durable vintage. You might disagree with him. You might question his motives. But not for a second will you ever be bored . . . goes on to call the memoir cunning, illuminating . . . Being able to shape-change, shed skins, sit on the hillside overlooking suburbia like a coyote, Hitchens represents a dying breed of public intellectual whose voice matters precisely because it can't be easily pigeonholed or ignored."―Douglas Brinkley, The Los Angeles Times

"One of the most engaging, exciting books I've read in years . . . The writing is lovely - introduction aside, which threatens early onset pretentia - Hitchens' cold-eyed evaluation of his younger self feels honest. To be sure, "Hitch 22'' is often a chronicle of Hitchens' best efforts. He teaches us that "cheap booze is false economy'' and reveals a youth engaged in boarding school homosexuality. But thankfully, Hitchens' efforts, friends, and close calls are rendered wonderfully in this strange book. Ultimately, "Hitch 22'' is about cultivating and maintaining one's intellectual integrity. As Hitchens writes, "[I]t is always how people think that counts for much more than what they think.''. . . But memoir generates pleasure through voice and sensibility, not through comprehensiveness. Nobody ever said self-awareness must lead to self-revelation, and even if you don't like what Hitchens thinks, it's easy to admire how he thinks."―Michael Washbum, The Boston Globe

"When the colorful, prolific journalist shares a tender memory, he quickly converts it into a larger observation about politics, always for him the most crucial sphere of moral and intellectual life."―The New York Times Book Review

"Hitchens offers up surprising revelations about the methods behind his madness as one of the world's most beloved and often hated scribes . . . bold and brassy Hitchens characteristically treats himself as the subject he knows best."―The Philadelphia City Paper

"Reading Hitch-22, his fascinating memoir of a career in combat journalism (both literal and figurative), one gets a sense that those looking for that tragic moment when a reliable man of the left became a fellow traveler of the right are asking the wrong question. On the big political issues that have long animated him-Middle Eastern politics, the dangers of religious messianism-his views have been surprisingly constant."―Michael C. Moynihan, Reason Magazine

"Perhaps the finest living essayist in the English language"
By Douglas K. Pinner
High praise indeed from none other than Christopher Buckley but an accolade well warranted.Wit,intelligence, honesty,a master of the appropriate obscure word or phrase, also a partisan polemicist of the far left, atheist, outrageously anti religious, but surprisingly non doctrinaire,in short a complex and fascinating mind.Full disclosure... I am totally on the other end of the political, cultural, and metaphysical spectrum and my life encompassed the same period and yet have always been an admirer even when outraged at his positions in that they are always reasoned from his own integrity ,much as I admire Camille Paglia on a likewise ambivalent basis. In reading some of the negative reviews the term 'name dropper' was cast. Well what is a memoir but a compilation of one man's trials, victories and the cast of characters that formed his life. And what a cast it was.And what a period of national and international upheaval.Ironically and sadly publication of his bio coincided with the news of his probably terminal cancer.True to character, that too is grist for the mill of this clear eyed mordant thinker as he describes that last journey beginning with his first essay "Topic of Cancer" .Read this only if you can be open to a mind with contradictory facets but one totally engaged with life and events and an unmatched command of the languge.A fun and fascinating read from an impressive mind .

Yours fraternally...

Christopher Hitchens used to emphasize his love of irony. Reading through the new preface, which was written after his cancer diagnosis, it all feels ironic -- but perhaps a better fitting word is tragic.

The book’s initial pages reflect a powerful introspection regarding death, dying, and the glee of mortality -- even before his diagnosis. It’s clear that Hitchens simply wanted to pack as many years into whatever life he had. With that goal in mind, it seems he succeeded.

His prose offers a glimpse into a genius writer. I’m not sure I’ve ever read more eloquent words. Hitchens’ memoir shows a grace for others, contempt for banality, and a self-effacing eloquence. At times, the memoir reads like a collection of markers, keystones, and memorials. His name dropping is sort of frustrating, as a young reader/writer -- unexposed to this culture. But it also provides inspiration for further reading. The network and milieu that Hitchens built was legendary; it included everyone from Ian McEwan to Salman Rushdie to Martin Amis.

Christopher appears to acknowledge much of his upbringing, and the inherent class that Yvonne (his mother) insisted on the family. From his preference for a full name “Christopher” -- not “Chris” -- to the formality in speech, class was a resounding focal point in his development.

There were two points of contention for me. First, Hitchens barely mentioned his intimate relationships or children. It’s unclear to me how such a great writer could unconsciously pass this up. This leads me to believe the Hitchens consciously avoided the topic of his descendants and relationships. Why? One can only imagine now. Second, Hitchens embraced America as the "land of opportunity" and emigrated from the United Kingdom. While he talks about the issues of immigration to America, with a nod to those less fortunate, I found that he was rather absent on the acknowledgement of powerful economic inequalities and racial tensions that are very present in the U.S.

Those tidbits aside, this is a masterpiece. I miss Hitchens’ writing dearly, and will certainly return to this memoir at a later date.

A Former Trotskyite Reflects on his Life in America and around the World
By Ted Marks
Christopher Hitchens, once the "enfant terrible" of the international hard left, has written a memorable memoir, HITCH-22, that is at once pretentious, bombastic, self indulgent, sometimes petulant -- and often brilliant. Much in Hitchens' book is laugh out loud funny as he takes one pot shot after another at his old political allies and enemies. And for someone with Hitchens' wit and writing facility, taking down his enemies with the written word is like shooting the proverbial fish in a barrel.

On a more serious note, Hitchens explains how he transformed himself from a London-based Trotskyite commentator into an American immigrant who defends of the allied invasion of Iraq. In fact, Hitchens presents us with a quite sensible defense of George W. Bush's war on terror in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is not an easy book to read, mainly because Hitchens writes in a style that makes clever use of inverted grammer and five and six syllable words as he reaches into his psyche to explain himself. Morever, his views are strongly held, and he doesn't suffer fools with any sympathy for their alleged pigheadedness. On the other hand, this book is a very good read for those who are trying to cope in a world that seems to be spiraling out of control.

Hitchens opens his memoir with a short family history - which may explain a lot about his cynical view of the world. His father was a quite common British Navy officer, while his mother was an immigrant Jew with Polish/Germanic blood. His mother ultimately meets s a tragic fate, while his father lives out his routine life without a clue to the torment of his wife or the intellectual pretensions of his son.

Hitchens was educated at Oxford, where he is exposed to the leftist tendencies of that venerable institution, and he became a self-proclaimed Trotskyite member of the communist party. In his early days, the Vietnam War was the focus of his activism, and he joined the anti-war movement that denigrated capitalistic America. But his intellectual curiosity was too restless for the static Marxist view of the world, and as he witnesses events in eastern Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, he begins to develop empathy for the free enterprise system that empowers America.

The turning point for Hitchens came on Sept. 11, 2001. The terrorist attacks on lower Manhattan and the Pentagon, costing some 3,000 lives (most of them American) was a revelation for Hitchens. "Before the close of that day, I had deliberately violated the rule that one ought not to let the sun set on one's anger, and had sworn a sort of oath to remain coldly furious until these hateful forces had been brought to a most strict and merciless account."

So Hitchens began to write about the hatefulness of the Islamist jihadists, defending America against those who felt "the chickens had come home to roost."

`I did not intend to be told, I said, that the people of the United States - who included all those toiling in the Pentagon as well as all those, citizens and non-citizens, who had been immolated in Manhattan - had in any sense deserved this or brought it upon themselves," Hitchens writes. "I also tried to give a name to the mirthless, medieval, death-obsessed barbarism that had so brazenly unmasked itself. It was, I said, 'Fascism with an Islamic Face'."

When he decides to become an American, he studies diligently for the citizenship test and passes, of course, with flying colors (Hitchens is a serious student of American history as evidenced by his book, "Thomas Jefferson: Author of America"). By that time he had become an ardent supporter of the incursion into Iraq and he was sworn in at the Jefferson Memorial by Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff (talk about clout).

His fondness for America, however, does not extend to American presidents and other national leaders: Lyndon Johnson ("hideous); Richard Nixon ("running a parallel regime of bagmen and wiretappers behind the façade of a legitimate government); Jimmy Carter ("..pious, born again creep); Ronald Reagan ("the carapace of geniality proved to be flaky...the look of senile, shifty malice); George H.W. Bush ("I simply detested the way in which he lied his way as Vice President through the Iran-contra scandal.."); Bill Clinton ("habitual and professional liar"); Curiously, George W. Bush escapes the Hitchen scorn. In an earlier volume ("The Trial of Henry Kissinger," published in 2001) Hitchens developed a full-scale criminal indictment of Henry Kissinger (whom Hitchens describes as"indescribably loathsome" in his memoir) for his conduct of American foreign policy.

In the final chapters of his book, Hitchens shifts the focus to himself. He comes across as a gadfly, of course, but also a wary, skeptical (sometimes cynical) observer of our times whose professional objectives include intense scrutiny of all that is evil in our world.

In an effort to explain himself further, Hitchens fashions for himself a Proustian survey in which his answers are supposed to give us insight into his persona. What we get is a portrait of a conflicted intellectual who takes pride in his knowledge and experiences, but whose most "marked characteristic" is insecurity. He most dislikes stupidity, according to his self-imposed questionnaire, and he most admires both moral and physical courage. His favorite virtue is an appreciation for irony.

It was with a sense of irony then, when Hitchens was approaching 50 years of age, that his younger brother, Peter, discovers that their mother was Jewish, raising the intriguing possibility that they both are Jewish. A self-proclaimed atheist (see his book, "god is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything"), Hitchens considers, but rejects the prospect of his Jewishness. In doing so, he reveals his contempt for Zionist Israel and its occupation of Palestinian lands. But his awareness of his Jewishness increases his sympathy for the suffering of the "children of Israel" as they seek a homeland. His confliction over his roots thus gives him valuable insights to the current Middle East stalemate between Israeli Zionists and Islam jihadists. Hitchens is clearly sympathetic to the Palestinian movement, but he also thinks that the Jewish people have a right to seek their own identity, preferably somewhere else than on Palestinian soil.

Hitchens illuminates his agony over this dilemma by describing the deterioration of his relationship with his good friend Edward Said, a Palestinian intellectual. Hitchens and Said initially developed a very close relationship, but after Sept. 11, 2001, according to Hitchens, Said started writing anti-American essays and articles, and their relationship started to cool. The relationship was effectively destroyed when Said quoted, without attribution, commentary by Hitchens that he (Said) said was "racist." There could be no greater insult to Hitchens than to be called a racist. He never spoke to Said again.

HITCH-22 is a very good memoir -- it is topical, penetrating, amusing and revealing -- one that is well worth the time and effort to read. The memoir offers an insightful look into the mindset of one of our era's most astute social and political critics.

Postscript: shortly after his memoir was published in the spring of 2010, Hitchens was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus that had metastasized into his lung and lymph nodes. He underwent chemotherapy and wrote in the September issue of Vanity Fair: "I am quietly resolved to resist bodily as best I can..."

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—This sequel to The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant (BenBella, 2014) is just as complicated as the previous volume, perhaps even more so. Anne continues to discover new depths to the supernatural angle of her situation, including an old identity that gives her unimaginable power, if only she can extract and control it. Meanwhile, her sweet romance with a doomed Ben remains chaste as she fights an inexplicable sexual attraction to Cania Christy's new headmaster, Dia Voletto, who insists on closely mentoring her artistic endeavors. Anne is the Nancy Drew of the vivified realm, searching for answers at every turn no matter what the consequences may be—and they just might be the loss of her chance to permanently wake from her drug-induced coma. The twists and turns of Anne's sleuthing, along with the emotional and sexual implications of her story, call for careful reading by mature teens who will appreciate the moral dilemmas she faces. How do we define good and evil? Should one sacrifice the here and now on the mere hope of a better future? VERDICT Fans of the Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" and Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's "Beautiful Creatures" series (both Little, Brown) will enjoy Anne's dark journey, which ends with the promise of more surprises to come.—Kerry Sutherland, Akron-Summit County Public Library, OH

Buckle up for a wild ride! Loved it!
By Carol
The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant is book two in The V Trilogy by Joanna Wiebe. Oh My Gosh!!! This book was a whirlwind. My anxiety level elevated from the first to the last. I actually felt out of breath a few times with everything going on!

We start out pretty much where book one left off. Teddy brought Anne back to Wormwood Island. Is everything she and Ben did for nothing? Villicus aka Hiltop aka Mephisto has been replaced as Headmaster at Cania Christy by Dia Voletto. They have also taken ownership of the entire Island and are now planning to build an additional college but what will be the tuition required to attend?

It is the start of the senior year. Ben’s crazy ex, Garnet, who is also the art teacher, has been assigned to Ben as his guardian. All Garnet wants is to get Ben back and Anne is sure the only way Ben can win Valedictorian (The Big V) is to pretend to get back together with Garnet so she will fight for him. But, Ben refuses. He wants this last year, this time, with Anne. How can Anne convince Ben to save himself?

There are also many new truths revealed in this book. Anne’s heritage, you could say, is not what we thought. She has a dark past, or her soul does. Once Anne realizes who she really is, she uses this to her advantage to try to save Ben. It’s always been about Ben. She will do anything to give him the chance of a new life off of Wormwood Island. But it seems as though Anne loses part of herself. The things she does, the lengths she goes to, are crazy and dark.

The new Headmaster, Dia, seems overly interested in Anne. Anne is an artist so he decides to mentor her every Saturday while she paints his portrait. What does Dia really want from Anne. Why all the extra attention?

This book was a whirlwind as I said above. Anne again bears the weight of the entire island on her own shoulders. All she really wants is to save Ben but she is pulled into a complicated plan to save the island at the same time. There are so many people counting on her and so many promises have been made. Anne was literally running from one place to another trying to keep it all together.

Can Anne defeat the evil that rules Wormwood Island? Or can she beat the evil that lives within her? Who will win, light or dark? We have Molly back in this book and I absolutely love her as Anne’s best friend. And then there is Ben! Every girl dreams of the most beautiful boy loving her so completely. With so many other characters, Teddy, Pilot, Harper, and even Dia, I was constantly wondering if they were good or bad.

There are so many surprises. You do need to have read the previous book in the series to be able to understand this one. You will probably be better off if you read them in a row. I had a little bit of a problem picking up the thread with so much going on but it all worked itself out. And the ending…well, some things are brought to a conclusion but still, not the ending I needed. There is obviously more to come! Will I be continuing on, well, I have no choice. I have to see what happens next. Thank you so much to Joanna Wiebe, BenBella Books, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It was a crazy, stressful, wild ride.

An extremely fast paced and engaging plot with some truly surprising twists, this book is a must read.
By Natalie @ BookLoversLife
Anne is thrust back into the world she thought she had left for good. Teddy brings her back to Wormwood on the pretext that her mother sent him to bring her back. When she returns, it feels like all she did was for nothing. After the events of the last book, Ben is now a student and has to compete in the Big V, the island has been turned over to Cania Christi and Pilot is back. The only good thing is that Villicus is no longer headmaster and is replaced by Dia Voletto, whom seems a lot better than Villicus.

Anne now has to help Ben win the Big V and try to destroy Cania Christy so no-one else has to go through it. She also must figure out why the new headmaster has such an interest in her and just who are the new teachers. Annes life is about to change forever!!

I loved the first book, The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant (see my review HERE) so when I saw this on Netgalley I jumped at the chance to read it. All I can say is wow, if you liked book 1 then you will love this. It was amazing!

Anne is back and better than ever. She returns to the island and feels like all she did was for nothing. While she defeated Villicus he is still there, just not the principal anymore. Her dad is now working for the island and Ben is a student. Everything looks grim and she doesn't know what to do. Ben only has this year to be in the running for the Big V or suffer the consequences. Anne wants Ben to give the Big V his all but he just wants to spend his time with Anne. She wont stand for that and as she learns some truly surprising things, she does something for him that will help him be in the running. Anne was so stronger in this book. She knows whats at stake now and will do anything she can to help Ben win. She learns some things about herself that will make or break her but will she be able to battle both the inner demons and outer ones??

The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant was such a roller coaster. Secrets upon Secrets were revealed and we find out some truly surprising things. You never know if someone is who they are supposed to be and it's hard to trust anyone. I devoured the book and was left gasping with some of the things revealed. This book played with my emotions but in a good way. I mean, come on!! Molly, Teddy, Dia and Anne all have things revealed that I didn't see coming!! Lol. So much happens in such a short time that it leaves you reeling.

Anyway, The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant was amazing. An extremely fast paced and engaging plot with some truly surprising twists, this book is a must read. Its one heck of a second book and while it answers a lot of questions, we are still left with more also add in the extra characters and their stories, well lets just say that I need book 3 like yesterday. Its jam packed with action, magic, secrets, twists, and basically anything you want in a great read. There's so much I want to talk about but I can't because of spoilers so all I'll say is you need to read this series!! It's such a unique and amazing series and one that captured my heart. This is one of my favourite reads this year and I so can not wait to see what happens next. It's a must read series!!

The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant
By Lauren
The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant was one of my favorite series starters of 2014. I thought it was a fantastic debut and definitely one of those books that I wish had gotten more hype. It ended on SUCH a cliffhanger that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the second book.

The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant starts off exactly where the first book left off, which thrilled me. I find sometimes in second books, there is a gap in the story telling so it leads to a less fluid reading experience if you were to read them back to back. That, thankfully, was not the case here. I was immediately thrust back into the chaos at Wormwood Island, and that’s exactly the way to describe it… chaos, because that’s what happened when Anne started that ball rolling.

I do have to say that the romance between Anne and Ben didn’t make me swoon as much as I wished it would have. I just don’t really care one way or another if they end up together. For me this story is about Anne… it’s so plot based on her individual story, and how she is involved in this whole dark mess that is Wormwood Island that Ben is the least of my worries. And speaking of Anne, I loved her even more than the first book. We see a lot of character development from Anne this time around, both good and bad, and I’m really interested to see how she continues to grow and change.

There was quite a lot happening in the first few chapters, and I was thrilled however there was definitely a lull for me for about the second quarter of the book. I felt like we were rehashing a lot of the same things, and I was starting to grow weary that it wouldn’t thrill me like the first book did. That changed rapidly when I reached the halfway mark. I could NOT put it down, and I read the last half in one chunk. I refused to stop reading until I seen what was happening.

The last half of the book was filled with twists, turns, and surprises and although I guessed where one part of the story was going I did NOT expect what happened in the end. Again, you are left with a huge cliffhanger and I can’t even explain how much I am anticipating this final book in the series.

If you haven’t read this series yet, I highly, highly recommend it. It’s wonderfully written, unique and keeps you guessing throughout the entire story!

Be a Grounded Male, then Take Action
By Tyson Hartnett
Great book to help guys out. First part is talking about being a "grounded male," which essentially means having a purpose and vision for your life. Girls don't want a guy who just messes around. Finding your purpose though, isn't an easy thing to do, and it's not something you will just develop. This book is saying that if you're a failure or success it doesn't matter, girls just want to see the drive.

2nd part is basically saying, take action. It talks about the idea of just walking up to a girl without a script and saying, "Hi, I'm ____, I want to get to know you." This is good advice, versus the scores of gurus with "opening routines." Girls can see past that and it's annoying. Do you really want to know her sign? Or is it just so you can get her talking? (Neil Strauss profiles "chick crack" in his book The Game.) So taking action is the most important thing, and Andrew provides a clear roadmap for this. Once you start, you may not be good at pickup/dating, but do it consistently over 3 months, 6 months, 24 months, you'll become a star because you'll understand what works for you.

A few things though, the marketing says, "$10 to finding your dream girl." I understand this, but just because you buy this book doesn't definitely mean you will find your dream girl, and there's no time frame specified. You still have to take action, deal with failure and rejection, and maybe you will find your true love one day. So, it's not that simple just by buying a book you'll find your dream girl.

A few grammar errors as well, and after every chapter you are prompted to sign up for a program, etc. I get that he's trying to promote his programs but if this were a physical book, it would seem more like a sales pitch than a book. Maybe people are okay with it because it's a Kindle version.

A big part of finding a woman is being yourself. There are many tips and tricks in here to go out with a woman, but at the end of the day, it comes down to be genuine and vulnerable. If you're just reading off a playbook every time you want to go out with someone, you're not being as genuine as you can be since you're just following instruction. LeBron doesn't follow an exact playbook when he steps on the court, because if he did then his talents would be washed away by rules.

So the more you go out, the more you will develop your swag, but don't forget to treat dating as a genuine, interpersonal experience, not like a checklist of things that you did or haven't done to get a girl into bed, or to find your "dream girl."

A curious blend of practical and idealistic
By Jens Andersen
David Deida meets RSD principles in Ferebee's seminal piece. I found the most value in the latter two thirds of the book which covers the practicalities from approach/talking to women, to logistics/texting, to the bedroom, to being in a relationship.

The book is very ambitious and tries to cover almost the entire gamut of dating issues including mindsets, values, philosophies etc. and as a consequence not every area gets as much depth and attention as some readers may like. On the other hand, the book manages to cover a lot of ground given its size, and goes far to demystify dating as a whole.

As his first book, I feel that Andrew's 'writer's voice' is still maturing; bookwriting is an art form that requires some experience to get some of the nuances mastered – and these are different from blogging. This doesn't however, detract from his message which comes across as authentic and to the point. I think this is where his real strength is; finding the motivational crux of key life issues, such as 'if you don't pursue your dreams and ambitions, the time will pass anyway, or that our fears, insecurities and things we let hold us back, pale in the face of death' – he doesn't directly say these things in the book, but they're themes I've heard him talk about before in his videos, and I admire the way he delivers them with conviction and congruence. The 'writer's voice' isn't really an issue during the practical elements of the books, and perhaps I'm being overly pedantic, as I can see from other reviews that many have been inspired by the writing. When it comes to the big idea stuff of the book however, such as what it means to be a 'Grounded Man', I feel that if Andrew can convey such ideas in future writing/wordsmanship with the conviction and congruence he conveys in his videos, he'll move from competence to mastery as a writer.

Programming .NET 3.5, by Jesse Liberty, Alex Horovitz

.NET 3.5 will help you create better Windows applications, build Web Services that are more powerful, implement new Workflow projects and dramatically enhance the user's experience. But it does so with what appears to be a collection of disparate technologies. In Programming .NET 3.5, bestselling author Jesse Liberty and industry expert Alex Horovitz uncover the common threads that unite the .NET 3.5 technologies, so you can benefit from the best practices and architectural patterns baked into this newest generation of Microsoft frameworks. While single-topic .NET 3.5 books delve into Windows Presentation Foundation and the other frameworks in greater detail, Programming .NET 3.5 offers a "Grand Tour" of the release that describes how the four principal technologies can be used together, with Ajax, to build modern n-tier and service-oriented applications. Developers have struggled to implement these patterns with previous versions of the .NET Framework, but this hands-on guide uses real-world examples and fully annotated source code to demonstrate how .NET 3.5 can make it easy. The concepts and technologies that this book covers include:

  • XAML -- Microsoft's new XML-based markup language for UI, used with WPF Windows Presentation Foundation
  • (WPF) -- a new presentation framework and graphics subsystem for Windows that puts Vista-like effect in your grasp
  • Ajax Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) - a new standards-based framework that enables applications to communicate across a network using a variety of protocols
  • Workflow Foundation (WF) -- framework for defining, executing, and managing workflows
  • CardSpace -- framework for managing the identities of your user
You'll learn how to useeach of the four frameworks alone and in concert to build a series of meaningful example applications. Examples are written in C#, and all of the source code will be available for download at both the O'Reilly and the authors' site, which offers access to a free support forum. Between them, authors Jesse Liberty and Alex Horovitz have nearly forty years of experience in delivering commercial applications for companies such as Citibank, Apple, AT&T, NeXt, PBS, Ziff Davis, and dozens of smaller organizations. Their combined experience is valuable for telling the story of .NET 3.5 and how it will shorten the development life cycle for applications developers, and enhance your productivity.

Too much of the wrong things, not enough of the right ones
By Robert K. Nickel
I have about 5 years of .NET programming experience, limited to .NET 1.1 and 2.0. I bought this book thinking it would be a good "quick hit" to learn, in overview form, about all the new technologies introduced in the two latest revs of .NET; not looking for in-depth coverage of any one subject, just enough to give me my bearings and get me started.

One thing that emerges clearly from reading the book is, this was in fact the authors' intent. In the very first chapter, it says "Our goal is to show you the 25% that you will use 85% of the time... this may well be the only book you need to consult about those parts of .NET that are not central to your business."

And indeed, the first chapter or two do provide a good description of the .NET 3.5 landscape: basically, there are a specific set of about 10 technologies that make up the bulk of what's new: XAML (a new form of UI markup that underlies WPF and Silverlight), Microsoft's take on AJAX, LINQ, WCF, Workflow Foundation and Cardspace.

From there, the book moves into a more specific treatment of each technology, and this is where it really wanders off into the woods, never to return. There is one principal reason for this: using examples the wrong way. Example is the book's central, if not only, teaching method, to the exclusion of necessary conceptual introduction, background, advance organization, and (often) even explanation of the examples themselves.

For instance, let's consider one major new concept-- the "lambda expression" from the chapter on LINQ. The example is shown ("customer => customer.FirstName == 'Donna'"), and then here is the explanation, in its entirety: "The lefthand operand, 'customer', is the input parameter, and the righthand operand is the lambda expression. In this case, it checks whether the customer's FirstName is 'Donna'."

I had to go on-line to learn that a lambda expression is a new, compact way of creating a delegate for an anonymous method, and that these delegates are a major element in the LINQ extension methods, whose parameters generally take the form of "Func(T, TResult)". (I also learned the meaning of "delegate", "anonymous method", and "Func(T, TResult)" from material on-line; to its credit, the book did go into some detail on what "extension methods" are.)

This mode of presentation was very typical-- leading off with an illustration in a vacuum, then following up with an insultingly oversimplified explanation. The section on AJAX was probably the worst.

As for an treatment of anything NOT specifically called for in the examples, forget it. I think the authors must be assuming that, in each case, their example (usually a two-screen application) will actually represent a direct analog to 85% of all usage for the new concept, and that nothing further is needed. Speaking for myself personally, I did not find that to be the case. I would have liked more explanation and less "Hello World".

As a very poorly fleshed-out framework, this book had some value. As I went through it, I at least got enough exposure to know which concepts I would need to understand in order to begin working with .NET 3.5. However, I had hoped for a book that would then go on to actually provide me with such an understanding. In that respect, this book was a major disappointment.

Excellent resource for .NET 3.5!
By Chris Stewart
I just finished reading Programming .NET 3.5 from O'Reilly. The book, published in August, is an overview of the latest .NET Framework revision. You'll get an introduction to the topics that have been introduced along the way that include technology from .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0, and the latest version; .NET 3.5. Also included are libraries such as ASP.NET MVC and Silverlight.

You can easily pick up this book and enjoy the introductions to technologies such as Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, ASP.NET MVC, and Silverlight. Each of these topics are presented in a way that will be familiar to .NET developers. New developers, without experience in .NET, will be able to take a lot away from this book. It certainly will do more for the developer who already has a .NET background, no matter how brief it is.

That said, if you only pick up the book for the introduction to each technology, you'll be missing the best that this book has to offer. Unlike most technology books these days, this book explains the topics within the context of best practices and real world scenarios. For example, prior versions of ASP.NET did not promote decoupled architectures. In fact, it made it difficult to achieve them. With the technology available in .NET 3.5, modeling and implementing proper architectures is encouraged and facilitated by the framework. This book will show you how that works in .NET 3.5 and introduce you to the technologies at the same time.

I highly recommend this book. It will be on my desk for easy reference for my .NET projects in the future.

A tour of .NET 3.5
By T Anderson
This book is very different than most of the book I have purchased on .NET because it covers XAML, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Silverlight, Ajax, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Workflow Foundation (WF), CardSpace, as well as the industry standard patterns Microsoft has incorporated in these technologies.

None of the technologies are gone into in great depth, and I thought I would be slamming them for that, but I can't because they tell us upfront they don't do that. I also can't do that because they did a great job of making this a roller coaster ride through the .NET 3.5 Framework. Meaning they point out some really cool stuff in one part of it, and then speed off to another part of it to show off the cool stuff there.

I would suggest you have somewhat of a background with .NET 3.5. You don't have to, but it helped me because I could easily place the book's topics into the proper context.

The authors do a good job introducing some of the key patterns found in the .NET Framework. It is the same as the rest of the book, they look at one cool view of the pattern and then speed off to the next one.

The code samples shown in the book are available on line, and they are well organized and very usable.

All in all I have enjoyed reading the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been trying to get a grip on all the different features in .NET 3.5. They will get a cool glimpse into each area.
