When Nooteboom began writing poetry in the Netherlands in 1956, he was considered an outcast for not abiding by the conventional experimental style popular at the time. Instead he took to learning from poets abroad, translating work by Wallace Stevens, Eugenio Montale, and Pablo Neruda. Nooteboom’s work is lucid and mysterious, evocative and elusive, and it is fitting that the collection begins and ends with poems of travel, moving back in time from an elderly man’s entanglement and resignation to the detachment and harsh light of youth, with everything in between.

About the Author

Jim Halderman brings a world of experience, knowledge, and talent to his work. His automotive service experience includes working as a flat-rate technician, a business owner, and a professor of automotive technology at a leading U.S. community college for more than 20 years.

 

He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio Northern University and a Master’s degree in Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Jim also holds a U.S. Patent for an electronic transmission control device. He is an ASE certified Master Automotive Technician and is also Advanced Engine Performance (L1) ASE certified. Jim is the author of many automotive textbooks, all published by Pearson Education.

 

Jim has presented numerous technical seminars to national audiences, including the California Automotive Teachers (CAT) and the Illinois College Automotive Instructor Association (ICAIA). He is also a member and presenter at the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT). Jim was also named Regional Teacher of the Year by General Motors Corporation and outstanding alumni of Ohio Northern University.

About the Author
Stanley J. Tambiah is Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. Among his several books is "Sri Lanka: Ethnic Fratricide and the Dismantling of Democracy" (1991).

Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

Stanley J. Tambiah is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 1954. He joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he taught for ten years, and was a Fellow of King's College. He went to the University of Chicago in 1973, and moved to Harvard Univesity in 1976. He began field work in Sri Lanka (1956-59), the island of his birth, and and later worked in Thailand. He is the author of eight books.

A sourcebook on Thai Animism

Although this book is written for an academic crowd, it is a fascinating read that kept me interested to the end. There is so much information in this book regarding Thai animistic beliefs that it boggles the mind. It covers funerary rites, ghosts, lore, spirit houses, witches, warlocks, reincarnation, etc. The author mentions something in passing that I found to be extremely profound regarding the modern Thai Buddhist/animist fusion--that the reason so many Thais worship ghosts is because they can deal or barter with the spirits to get around the karmic hand they were dealt at birth. Since there is no escaping karma, you can bribe a ghost with an appeasement offering to help you in marriage, business, love, or whatever else. This explains so much about the mindset behind ghost worship, that I wish he would have expanded on it more--although the author does cover in great detail, the Thai cosmos, spirit world, and its relation to Buddhism. You may have to read this book more than once to absorb it all.

About the Author

Dan Surry is Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment in the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University. Associate Editor, and past Editor-in-Chief, of the journal TechTrends and a former North American Corresponding Editor for the British Journal of Educational Technology, Dr. Surry is the co-editor of Technology Integration in Higher Education: Social and Organizational Aspects (with R. Gray Jr. and J. Stefurak, 2010) and Technology as a Tool for Diversity Leadership: Implementation and Future Implications (with J. Lewis and A. Green, 2012).

Natasha lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband and three children.

Feeling blessed that this book was written

This book is absolutely wonderful! I have two children that suffer greatly from anxiety and one is already starting the book. I read it first so I could help them with the same advice and understand the process. It's a very quick read but hits the points home so well that you finish it with a bit of shock of all the clarity that just popped out. I simply can not wait for my children to finish it. I will also save it for one of my younger children who has Aspergers for the appropriate time for him to read it. Thank you so much for this book!!

My daughter doesn't really like to read however, she got through this book quickly! It's written very well for teenagers and gets straight to the point on how to deal with anxiety. It helped my teen daughter a lot. She was able to deal with her anxiety a lot better after reading this. I highly recommend it.
